Oum Kalthoum was one of the greatest singers of the 20th Century. With a voice so strong she had to stand a metre away from the microphone and her mesmerising ability to improvise to Egyptian classical standards she achieved mythical status in Arab countries. Her funeral in Cairo in 1975 was attended by over 4 million people.
